What impressed you most about the man, Odysseus?
What were you not impressed by?

Is Odysseus a hero? Explain.

  1. The thing that impressed me the most about Odysseus, is that he wouldn’t give up on what he really wanted for those 20 years of war, he had his mind on it and wouldn’t give up until he got what he wanted. I think that Odysseus is a hero, he would do anything to make people happy and that he was nice, and not like the suitors who wanted to marry Penelope.

  2. Something that really impressed me about Ulysses is how smart he is. He was always the one to figure out an idea and would always tell them what to do next.. He never gave up on what he wanted and it really payed off in the end. It took him a very long time to get back to Ithica, but he was really happy when he finally got home. Something that didn’t impress me about Ulysses was how all of his men died. As the leader it is his responsibility to take care of all his shipmates, and he didn’t do a great job. All of his men died and it was his fault. Even though everybody makes mistakes, he made a few too many to be considered a “good” leader. In the end, I was really happy that Ulysses found his way home and was able to see his wife and son.

  3. What most impressed me about Ulysses is that he never gave up on his goal to get back home to Ithaca and reclaim being the king of Ithaca. He also used some crazy intelligence to get away from all of those monsters and witches. One thing that I wasn't impressed about is that all of his men died. It's his responsibility to make sure that none of his men die on his watch. But you have to give some slack because he was travelling the ocean while the SEA god tried to kill them. But in the end all of his men died and it was his job to protect him.

  4. What impressed me the most about Ulysses is the fact that he never gave up after 20 years of trying to find his way back home to Ithaca. If I were Ulysses, I would have given up after like... 1 month!!!!! He was determined to make it back home even though he lost all of the 150 sailors that he started off with! He had definitely encountered some tough challenges such as the Laestrigonians, Circe, Calypso and Polyphemus! I would have been scared to death an also, he was traveling by boat when Poseidon hated him and tried to make sure that he never made it back home! It was a rough 20 years for him and if I was Ulysses, I would have totally given up!

  5. Odysseus is a hero indeed! I think reading the last chapter of "The Adventures Of Ulysses gave me a stronger description of Ulysses. Yes, he has made some bad decisions, but I think his bad decisions helped him later on to be wiser and a better over all leader. I found that he learned from his mistakes. In the last chapter of the story, I thought it was very smart of Ulysses to come up with such a sharp and well thought plan in such little time. Personally his plan proved he had great instincts which a good leader should have. In the end, Ulysses grew to be a great leader, despite his mistakes he made along his journey back to Ithaca!

  6. I was impressed by many of Ulysses’s action. Overall I was impressed by his intelligence, his bravery and his confidence. He was very smart because whenever there was a struggle he would come up with an idea really quickly, which is very smart of him. He is very brave and because if I was in his situation I would have not have the courage to continue after the first two Island. I would have just said “Man, this is mission impossible!” and just quit. After the Cyclops’s Island I would have been so terrifies I would have just told my sailors lets go home or jump in the ocean and suicide. Lastly he is extremely confident. I don’t know how he had hope that he would make it home. Seriously after seeing Circe I would have stayed with her for the rest of my life, believing that there is no chance I will make it home. Finally I would consider him a hero because one important qualities a hero should have is confident and he definitely has that.

  7. Ulysses can be very impressing in many ways. One way that stood out to me the most was how brave and smart he was. I was so impressed on how he came up with the idea of the Trojan horse! It was such a smart idea that even Troy one of the hardest places to beat actually got defeated by them. Another reason why Ulysses is very smart, is because he never got distracted by anything. If I was him I would definitely stay with Calypso because who wouldn't want to live in paradise? Ulysses is also very brave because he takes lots of risks. Like fighting Cyclops, going to the land of the dead and so much more! Even though I agree that Ulysses is smart and brave, what bugs me is, it doesn't seem like he cared for his shipmates. For example, when the whole group first left Ithaca they were a bunch of people! Though only one person arrived back and that was Ulysses. So that means along the way bad things happened to his shipmates. It doesn't seem like he really cared for them since not even one shipmate came back.

  8. I think Ulysses is a great hero. He’s smart, strong and feared by his enemies. What more can you ask from a leader? He might of lost 150 on his trip but he miraculously survived the wrath of a god. Not just any god he survived Poseidon one of the most powerful of the gods. The thing that is most important for a hero is that we still talk about them today and whit Ulysses that is definitely the case.

  9. What impressed me about Ulysses was that he went to war, a war that he didn't need to be involved in, and help to win it. He traveled and went through all these hardships and never gave up. He sailed trying to get back to his wife and son for 20 years. He never stopped trying to get back to his family and home. Now that's impressive considering he wasn't as young as he used to be. What didn't impress me though, was that he was carless with some of his crew and that he wasn't vigilant to his wife. He had affairs with a titan and a half goddess. He was carless at times and that got his men killed and hurt others. All in all Ulysses was a hero no matter his faults, I mean he's only human right? But even with his faults he still loves his wife and his son and he never gave up to be reunited with them.

  10. I was impressed with Odysseus because of his perseverance. He had so many obstacles throughout his long journey, but he was able to get through them. Every chapter that we read there was always a different problem, he was also troubled with Poseidon, but he still survived. He was very wise but sometimes he made bad decisions too. For instance he stayed with Circe for a long time. I would have left right away, even though if it seemed tempting. I would have kept going to return home. I thought it was cool when he was the only man who could bend the bow. I wish that, in the book they would have included the moment where Odysseus was reunited with his wife. But I still think that this book was quite good and eventful.

    1. I totally agree with you. Ulysses should've left Circe the minute he got there. I also wish they put the part when they were all reunited. Great Blog Erin.

  11. What I like and find so amazing is that after 20 years of war and going through obstacles and adventures such as meeting a giant Cyclops (Polyphemus), he had overcame the wrath of one of the greatest gods we've ever known of, Poseidon, the god of the seas. Can you ask to do something greater than overcoming a gods wrath, going through wars, escaping a cyclops with an amazing strategy, dragging all of his asleep men from the beach and stuck broken pieces of wood into his eye sockets at the same time so he wouldn't fall asleep like the rest of his men, stayed with Circe for 4 years and had the courage to leave her to go back to Ithaca like he was originally supposed to do. Finally, after 20 years of war and adventures, he finally got back home to his wife in Ithaca. He made bad decisions no doubt about it, but it was still an amazing journey.

  12. I was impressed by Ulysses because he went to the Trojan War to help fight and he lent a helping hand. I am also impressed by Ulysses because he has survived twenty years going through many adventures and he still is determined to find Penelope and Telemachus. I found it impressive that Ulysses put little pieces of wood in his eyes to stay up. I was not impressed when the oars of the boat were too long and Scylla ate six of Ulysses’s men. This was a bad move for a leader (he should have made sure they would fit.) I wouldn’t say he is a hero because on his way to Ithaca all his men got slaughtered. He made too many mistakes. In the end I was just happy they were all together.

Ulysses has definitely made mistakes in his life, well, every leader has probably made a mistake before. He lost quite a few men (150) on his way back home to Ithica, pretty much everywhere he went he lost at least one of his men. He killed a man to save himself. Eventually he did get back home. I don't think of Ulysses to be the great of a hero/leader, I think that sometimes he cared a little bit too much about himself. If you're gonna be a hero you should save more people and kill less.

  14. What impressed me the most about Odysseus is that he managed to never give up what he wanted after 20 years away from Ithaca. I find he was so concentrated on his task, that he would go through anything just to get what he wanted. I was so amazed that he started off with 150 crew members, but in the end it was just him. I think Odysseus is a hero because he did everything he can to make people happy and I could really tell that he wanted Penelope back for him and not one of the suitors for her.

  15. The thing that impressed me the most about Ulysses was the fact that he didn't give up on what he needed to get done even though he was 20 years away from Ithaca. Even though I don't think that he was that great of a leader, if I was him, I would have probably forgotten my husband and stopped thinking about him completely. He also never gave up, even though ant other man would have died and just given up. One thing to learn from him is that you should never give up and always go after what you had in mind from the very beginning.

Ulysses is strong, brave, intelligent, maybe loyal to his wife, he kept trying to get home to her for 20 years but he cheated on her twice during those 20 years. But in the end I don't think he's a hero. A hero is supposed to be someone who saves people, someone who saves others from dangers they can't protect themselves from, someone who puts other needs ahead of their owns. Ulysses has some hero qualities but it's not all there. How can Ulysses be called a hero if he gets all his men killed. A hero wouldn't slaughter the villain(s) at the end of the story… most of the time. Ulysses is a good soldier and an OKish leader but he is not a hero.

  17. I was impressed of Ulysses intelligent ideas. His ideas or so original and brilliant for example when he met Polyphemus the Cyclops saying his name was nobody then he blinded him and his screaming attracted the other Cyclops when they asked him who blinded him. When Polyphemus responded he said nobody because Ulysses said his name was nobody so the Cyclops thought nobody hurt him and that let them time for Ulysses and his men to escape the cave. I was also impressed by his determination when it took him 20 years to get home and facing the wrath of Poseidon.

  18. Even though Ulysses was a bad leader at sometimes he was a very wise man. If you think about it he was the only reason that the soldiers would survive if it wasn't him in charge the people would be able to do nothing. After 20 years of being away from Ithica he still never gave up and it is why he got and there is one word for that :courageous. To prove that he is a hero and cared about his long lost men he carried all of them to the ship when they were on the island with the lotus flowers. People can say whatever they want and it is there choice of what they think but I thought he was a great leader.

  19. The things that impressed me about Ulysses is that he made it through so many dangerous situations. He was in so many dangerous situations that I honestly couldn't name all of them without the book. I also found he had an amazing idea to tell Polyphemus that nobody had stabbed him, it was an amazing and clever thought. What didn't impress me that much, was how he started off with about 150 men, and ended with just him. Not that he could do much about it, but still.

  20. I was impressed by the way he was able to conquer who ever came to battle him. I was also impressed by how he was able to find out where he was and which way he needed to go. I was not impressed by the useless things he did. Such as staying with two women, wasting time, and risking everyone's life. His men were about to die any second without seeing their families. In that case does he really need women or the sight of home and family. He stayed with Circe and Calypso even though they were evil and they put the crew's lives in danger. He was not a hero. hero is someone who fulfills his duties without fail. Ulysses did not have to lose the lives of all his men. At least one would have survived if he had not stayed with the two ladies. In conclusion, I believe that Ulysses did not act smart.

  21. What impressed me about Ulysses is that he actually put pieces of wood in his eyes to stay awake. That shows that he cares for his men and he is a great leader. I was not impressed when he killed Elpenor to find the path to the Land of the Dead, but it had to be done. I think that Odysseus is a hero because he saved Ithica. He also did so many clever things like getting into troy by the Trojan horse and telling Polyphemus that his name is “Nobody”. After reading all of Ulysses' adventures I think that he’s a great man.

    1. I agree with you! Ulysses is such a great leader from all the things he's done! Sure, he did some mistakes but you're right! He did think of so many clever things! He was really smart and his ideas about the Trojan horse were super intelligent! Your blog is pretty AWESOME and I really enjoyed reading it!

  22. Absolutely everything! Odysseus impressed me with all of the things that he had chosen to go through with. Odysseus went through so much over the 20 years he was away from home! Even though, there were some islands that he wanted to stay at forever, he still continued on to go home to his wife Penelope, which is pretty impressive! I probably wouldn't of done if I’m going to be honest with you. His leadership skills are also unbelievable! How he does every move so fast when choosing in a life or death situation is beyond comprehension for me! I would of NOT known how to do that but I wish I could. Literally, everything about Odysseus impresses me since he’s that EPIC. But mostly his skills and fast thinking impressed me to an extent where I would probably take lessons from him on how to do! Since Odysseus is really cool, nothing much didn’t impress me. He’s human so he made mistakes, we always have to remember that everyone isn’t perfect. Maybe the only thing that I found strange was that his temptation to stay with a few different women during the adventure made me question his love about Penelope but I guess he was upset and he needed comfort. But if your married, you shouldn’t take on another woman already. Odysseus is exactly the synonym for hero! He’s done so much and made so many different choices that he deserves this title! He’s worked hard all his life and that’s enough to know that he was always trying his best to persevere back to Ithaca. Sure, even though everyone died but himself, I understand from reading the book that he was always trying his best but when your under pressure, YOU’RE under pressure. Just saying, Odysseus is considered a synonym for hero in my dictionary.
